We jumped for joy when we discovered Wasota African Cuisine, the food-trailer reincarnation of the now-closed World Beat Café.
You see, Lawrence Eguakun, chef and owner of both establishments, was diagnosed with cancer and had to close World Beat Café a few years back. But now he’s better! And he’s now serving up some of his legendary West African fare at Wasota. Lawrence makes some of the most delicious food we’ve ever tasted, so if you’re not already eating there weekly, we suggest you get down there right away!
With an extensive vegan menu, it can be hard to choose. Luckily, if the menu has you wanting one of everything, you can get a heavy plate of the favorites with the Wasota Platter. Each item has a unique and distinctive flavor that complements the next, with akara (black eyed pea fritters), aromatic stewed spinach, sweet fried plantains AND savory jollof rice, all smothered in spicy Benin sauce.
Want some extra Benin sauce? Need a menu suggestion? Just want to shoot the breeze? Lawrence is the nicest guy around-- tell him that the folks at VegAustin.com said hi!
P.S. If you need something to cool your tastebuds, grab some vegan ice cream at Kat’s next door!
